Sadie Robinson: Huge votes for strikes: the fight is on!

2256

18.6.11

Hundreds of thousands of public sector workers plan to walk out together on 30 June after winning big strike votes. The workers are fighting a vicious attack on their pensions that would see them pay more in, work longer and get less money.

Yuri Prasad: Tory NHS ‘reforms’ in retreat

2256

1

18.6.11

David Cameron has been forced into a humiliating climbdown over his plans to “reform” the NHS. The government hoped its health and social care bill would be the first step in dismantling the health service in England and replacing it with a myriad of competing companies.

As the Tories push through the biggest attacks on the welfare state in history, the silence from Labour leader Ed Miliband has been deafening. His much-hyped speech this week was meant to signal the start of his party’s fightback. Instead it simply continued Labour’s rightward drift.

Allegedly the author of this insight is Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. His portrait, and that of US president Barack Obama, serve as a warning that the revolution’s fate is far from settled.
Western politicians are falling over each other to support the “Arab Revolution”. But for them “support” means “control”.

Ron Margulies: Turkey election: voters want less military influence

18.6.11

Why have Turks voted the same party into government three times running?

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) is conservative and its government implements neoliberal economic policies strictly in line with the wishes of big business. Yet it just got 49.8 percent of the vote, up 3 percent from the last elections and up 15 percent from 2002.

Mike Gonzalez: Peru's new president won't fight for workers unless pushed

The election of Ollanta Humala as president of Peru expresses a widespread rejection of neoliberalism.

Ken Olende: Botswana mass strike suspended – but some workers stay out

18.6.11

Unions have suspended the public sector strike in Botswana in southern Africa after eight weeks. But some of the 90,000 workers were still on the picket lines on Monday morning. “How can we go back to work when some of our comrades that we started the strike with are now jobless? This is an insult,” one told the press.
