This issue focuses on the national question. In the Communist Manifesto Marx wrote: The bourgeoisie has through its exploitation of the world market given a cosmopolitan character to production and consumption in every country. To the great chagrin of Reactionists, it has drawn from under the feet of industry the national ground on which it stood ...

John Molyneux: The National Question – some basic principles

Marxists are internationalists not nationalists. Nationalism is a key element in bourgeois ideology. It is one of the ideological means, arguably in today’s world the main ideological means, by which the capitalist class of all nations secures the compliance and even support of the working class and of the oppressed of all nations.

Andy Durgan: Catalonia: Towards Independence?

8

dec 13

On Catalan National Day 11 September 2012, a claimed one and half million people, around 20% of Catalonia’s population, demonstrated in Barcelona in favour of independence. Such annual demonstrations had barely mobilised a few thousand or so people for many years. For the first time since the late seventies, the Constitutional settlement of 1978 is on the verge of collapse.

Memet Uludag: The long struggle of the Kurds

8

22

dec 13

As one of the major political conflicts in the Middle-East, the Kurdish struggle has dominated the recent history of the region, spreading across the modern day countries of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran; and yet, little is known about the origins or the historical-political journey of the Kurds.

Keir McKechnie: Scotland: Yes to Independence, No to Nationalism

8

37

dec 13

Scotland is scheduled to hold a referendum on independence in September 2014. This poses many big questions. Can an independent Scotland offer a way out of economic crisis and protect people from its worst effects? Would workers be better off in an Independent Scotland or sticking with the union? Can an independent Scotland act as a beacon to the rest of Europe by creating a society based on equality and social justice? Or will it just be a low wage, pro-free market economy that panders to multinational businesses?

Brian Kelly: Northern Ireland: The Left, Sectarian Resurgence and the National Question Today

8

48

dec 13

The dramatic resurgence of sectarianism on the streets of Belfast and elsewhere across the north of Ireland over the past year has taken establishment commentators by surprise. But in one sense, the new round of polarisation that has developed on the heels of loyalist ‘flag protests' shouldn't come as a shock at all.

‘A working class government, the product of the struggle of the producing against the appropriating class, the political form at last discovered under which to work out the economical emancipation of labour’ – Marx, The Civil War in France

Paul O’Brien: Seamus Heaney: The Redress of Poetry

8

66

dec 13

Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry in 1939. He was perhaps the finest lyrical poet of his generation and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. He had a popular and loyal readership. In the year before he died, Heaney's books made up two-thirds of the sales of living poets in the UK. He was an adept, even charismatic, reader of his own poems at the many public readings he gave all over the world.

Michael Taft: Review: Kieran Allen with Brian O’Boyle, Austerity Ireland: the Failure of Irish Capitalism

8

72

dec 13

As one would expect, Kieran Allen and Brian OBoyle provide an unrelenting analysis of the austerity programme in Ireland, setting themselves the task of describing causes and forces, promoting a new programme and identifying the political agents to promote that programme.

Sinead Kennedy: Review: Nancy Fraser, Fortunes of Feminism: From State Managed Capitalism to Neoliberal Crisis

8

75

dec 13

During the last two decades of feminist theory, what was once central to feminism – a fundamental critique of the nature of capitalist society – found itself increasingly relegated to the margins.

James O’Toole: Review: Harry Browne, The Frontman: Bono (In The Name of Power)

8

78

dec 13

Bono is a good liar – a very good liar. I suppose to some extent the ability to suspend reality and create myths is something all musicians engage in, creating their own ‘legend’, but Bono's myth has gone from a pitch made to Hot Press magazine in the early days to being a ‘working class’ origin story told for the bene t of American audiences; a myth that went on to set up countless businesses and sell millions of records. The problem is that Bono’s ‘talent’ for creating myths took a much more sinister turn when he became the ‘humanitarian’ cover for imperial conquerers and a PR man for the 1%.

Annette Mooney: Review: Kitty Holland, Savita – The Tragedy that Shook a Nation

8

dec 13

Kitty Holland’s new book, Savita, reveals for the first time, in full and in sequence the hour by hour, day by day, medical notes recorded by Savita’s multidisciplinary-team, in Galway University Hospital.
