Wayne Clements: National Gallery: Bridget Riley: Paintings and Related Work

jan 11

Bridget Riley, one of Britain's most successful artists, has selected for this exhibition paintings from the National Gallery's collection to go alongside her own works. They include works by Italian Renaissance artists Mantegna and Raphael, and three studies by the French post-impressionist Georges Seurat. Riley, unlike some earlier modernists, has no wish to reject the past or the gallery.

Judith Orr: Council of despair

354

4

jan 11

One way in which the coalition government is attempting to deflect anger about its austerity measures is to cut funding to local councils – meaning that the councils themselves are seen as inflicting the pain when libraries, youth centres and sports facilities close.

Kevin Devine: The cost of living through austerity

354

4

jan 11

The economic recovery remains elusive, but the cost of living remains high and looks set to go even higher in 2011.

Patrick Ward: Unhealthy profits

354

5

jan 11

The sickness of the economy has done little to dent the healthy profits of private hospitals.

Suzanne Jeffery: Cancun conference recycles old excuses

354

6

jan 11

The outcome of the UN climate talks in Cancún, Mexico, is being spun as a success. Such claims can only be made because of the chronically low expectations before the conference.

Patrick Ward: Self-server

"When companies or people go about securing and storing large quantities of data that isn't rightfully theirs, and publishing this data without ensuring it won't injure others, it's a violation of our terms of service, and folks need to go operate elsewhere."

Patrick Ward: Full force of hypocrisy

354

jan 11

"Things got out of hand and we'd had a few drinks," said David Cameron back in 1986, speaking about his time in Oxford. "We smashed the place up and Boris set fire to the toilets."

Pat Stack: In my view: Quantum leak

It's all beginning to feel as if it were a Stieg Larsson novel. You have computer hacking, a journalist exposing the dirty doings of the rich and powerful, outcry and outrage from the said rich and powerful, and before you know it there are attempts to discredit the journalist, legal proceedings and it all ends up in the Swedish courts. All that's missing is a girl with a dragon tattoo.

The recent artillery exchanges in the Korean peninsula come after a period of escalating tension in the region.

Terry Wrigley: Education at the Crossroads

354

10

jan 11

The coalition government has launched a colossal attack on all aspects of our education system. Terry Wrigley argues that this is an acceleration of previous governments' policies to drive the market into the heart of learning and will deepen a class hierarchy of institutions and students.

Dave Sewell: A Generation in Revolt

354

15

jan 11

For years we have been told that today's students are apathetic. Dave Sewell argues that the "Day X" demonstrations marked the birth of a new student movement.

Ken Muller: Union-made: The best is yet to come

jan 11

Holding the Islington NUT banner at the corner of Parliament Square last month, just before Eton-educated David Cameron and his new fag, Nick Clegg, were about to lead their MPs to vote for a trebling of university fees, my mind flashed back to October 1968.

Patrick Ward: Interview John Pilger: The fight for principled journalism

354

18

jan 11

Despite claims of impartiality, journalists are often subservient to the needs of the rich and powerful. John Pilger spoke to Patrick Ward about the media, power and his new film The War You Don't See.
