This issue of International Socialism has been expanded by another 16 pages to make room for two important features.

Tony Cliff: The balance of class forces in Britain today

6

sep 79

A major reassessment of the class struggle in the light of the experience of the last five years.
This article is an excerpt from a forthcoming book entitled "The Employers' Offensive and the Fight Back".

Jonathan Bearman: An anatomy of the Bennite left

We would like to draw our readers' attention to Jonathan Bearman's Anatomy of the Bennite Left. There is no doubt at all that the politics of the so called 'alternative economic policy' and the forthcoming debates within and around the Labour Party, will attract a lot of attention in the coming months. This article does a great deal to clear away some of the confusions that surround some of these notions.

Ian Birchall: Social democracy and the Portuguese ‘revolution’

6

71

sep 79

It is now four years since the hot revolutionary summer of 1975 in Portugal. The Portuguese experience (together with the Italian elections of 1976 and the ‘social contact’ in Britain) marked a crucial turning-point for the European revolutionary left, whose ‘crisis’ Chris Harman analysed in Number 4 of this journal.

Dave Albury: Alternative plans and revolutionary strategy

6

85

sep 79

In the last few years, when redundancies have been threatened because of cuts in public or private expenditure or actual overproduction, groups of workers have often come up with the idea of “alternative plans” for their company or industry.

Pete Goodwin + Alex Callinicos: On the perspectives of the Fourth International

6

97

sep 79

The debate on the perspectives of the Fourth International takes place in the context of the forthcoming 11th World Congress of that body, to which we, in the SWP, have been invited for the first time. We will be attending as observers and the exchange published here is part of this process.

John Ross + Brian Grogan + Tariq Ali: Reply to the central committee of the Socialist Workers’ Party

A reply to Alex Callinicos & Pete Goodwin: “On the perspectives of the Fourth International” in this issue.
The decision to invite the Socialist Workers Party to attend the eleventh World Congress and to comment on our discussion has already proved fruitful. The fraternal response by Pete Goodwin and Alex Callinicos means that a dialogue could result, at the very least, in political clarity and at best by a narrowing of the differences and a drawing closer between the Fourth International and the SWP.

Sabby Sagall: The crisis and the multinationalisation of capital

6

123

sep 79

Since the War, the export of capital has increasingly taken the form of the export of manufacturing capacity by enterprises located in one country to subsidiaries in others. By 1967, the exports of the ten leading Western countries just exceeded half the turnover of the overseas production sites of the multinational corporations (MNCs): 130 billion dollars compared to 240 billion dollars.

Riccardo Albione: On the Italian revolutionary left

sep 79

We have begun to receive some contributions to Chris Harman's major article on the revolutionary left in Europe published in International Socialism 2:4, and we are including the first of them, by Riccardo Albione on Italy, in this issue.
