Chris Harman: The myth of market socialism

42

3

mar 89

The tide of free market ideas is running as strongly as ever among socialists, both in the West and in Eastern Europe. In 'The myth of market socialism' Chris Harman confronts the work of Alex Nove, one of the foremost theorists of market socialism. His critique of the theory of the market complements Mike Haynes' analysis of three market economies – Yugoslavia, Chile and Hungary – in 'Nightmares of the market', published in our last issue.
Taken together these articles provide a damning analysis of both the theory and practice of modern free marketeers.

mar 89

The campaign last year against Clause 28, the government’s attempt to prevent local councils “promoting homosexuality”, led to a resurgence of the gay and lesbian movement. Partly as a response, Norah Carlin provides a wide ranging historical survey showing that gay oppression is closely linked to the rise of capitalism.

Many on the left, especially those associated with the Greens, are, at best, suspicious of and, at worst, hostile to science. This has never been an attitude shared by Marxists. In his review of Stephen Hawking's bestseller A Brief History of Time Duncan Blackie explains Hawking's place in the 20th Century revolution in physics and opens a discussion of the relationship between Marxism and modern science.

John Kelly is a lecturer at the London School of Economics and a former member of the Communist Party. His recent book Trade Unions and Socialist Politics attacked the idea that the working class and the industrial struggle are no longer a force for social change, while at the same time criticising ideas associated with this journals tradition. In our last issue Jack Robertson reviewed Trade Unions and Socialist Politics. Here John Kelly gives his reply.

Phil Taylor reviews Tony Cliff and Donny Gluckstein's recent history of the Labour Party.
