Sheila McGregor: Rape, pornography and capitalism

dec 89

Violence against women, an increasingly important political issue for more than ten years, is caused by patriarchy – or so many on the left argue. Pornography, it is said, is both patriarchal and an incitement to rape. 'Pornography is the theory, rape is the practice' runs the slogan.
Sheila McGregor argues that such ideas are based on simplistic and ahistorical views of human nature. Using a wealth of statistical material she examines sexuality under capitalism and provides an alternative explanation of violence against women and of the effect of pornography.
