The rise of the far right in Europe has struck fear into the hearts of many. But fear is our greatest enemy. In its place we must put a clear sighted analysis of the roots of fascism and develop from it a strategy to defeat the neo-Nazis. Chris Bambery looks at the rise of fascism in Italy, Germany and France during the 1930s to discover the origins of fascism. He examines the alternative strategies for defeating the Nazis offered by the left then and now. He concludes with an account of the far right in Europe today and spells out the steps we must take to stop the return of the Holocaust. |

'WHERE IS capitalism going?' is the second part of a major examination of trends in the world economy. In International Socialism 58 Chris Harman looked at the prospects for the economies of the advanced industrialised world. Here he looks at some key economies in the Third World-India, China and the Newly Industrialising Countries of south and east Asia. He traces the links between the economic changes of the last 20 years, the fall of both state capitalist and neo-liberal economic orthodoxies, and the growth of instability in the world imperialist system. |

The Chilean coup which overthrew Salvador Allende's left wing government exactly 20 years ago marked the end of one of the most prestigious attempts to gain socialism by constitutional means. Mike Gonzalez looks back to those tragic events and argues that other, revolutionary, opportunities existed had the organisations of the Chilean left been equipped to take them. |
