Analysis: The misery of New Labour

117

3

jan 08

The Brown bounce has become the Brown belly flop—and one into an ever stormier ocean. The immediate source of New Labour’s misery is obvious. Those who live by the image die by the image. Nothing distinguishes Labour’s post-Thatcherite programme for making capital happy from that of David Cameron’s Tories.

Analysis: Pakistan: over the edge?

117

5

jan 08

The title of article we ran on Pakistan 18 months ago was “On the Edge of Instability”. Now the country is well inside the arc of instability created by the “war on terror”, adding to the multitude of problems besetting US and British imperialism all the way from the Horn of Africa to the Indus.

Analysis: Lessons from Venezuela's referendum

117

9

jan 08

There are two sorts of defeats the left can suffer. There are devastating defeats that set it back years or even decades. And there are small defeats from which it can learn.
The defeat for Hugo Chavez’s referendum on a new constitution in December was of the second sort. But if the lessons are not learnt quickly, the ground will be laid for a defeat of the first sort.

Chris Harman: The crisis in Respect

117

25

jan 08

Two meetings took place in London on 17 November 2007, in venues about two miles apart. One was the 360-strong annual conference of Respect, which was attended by 270 delegates from 49 local branches and 17 student groups. The other, held in opposition to the conference and under the title “Respect Renewal”, was a rally of 210 people called by MP George Galloway and a number of notables, including some members of the outgoing National Council and some of Respect’s local councillors.

Joseph Choonara: The united front

117

49

jan 08

The “united front” is a strategy. It is the answer revolutionaries give to a very general question: how should workers committed to the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism relate to those who believe that the system can be reformed and does not need to be overthrown?

Claire Ceruti + Leo Zeilig: Slums, resistance and the African working class

117

69

jan 08

Mike Davis’s book Planet of Slums provides a brilliant account of the rapid growth of urban areas and megaslums, created by the hammer blows of the global restructuring of the world system since the 1970s. This article focuses on some of Davis’s claims about the working class, and concentrates exclusively on the situation in sub-Saharan Africa.

Chris Harman: Theorising neoliberalism

117

87

jan 08

A new word1 entered the vocabulary of the left in November 1999 with the momentous protest against the World Trade Organisation in Seattle—”neoliberalism”.2 Just as the movement that erupted at that protest defined itself as being against “globalisation” (or “corporate globalisation”), so it came to describe itself as “anti-neoliberal”. The far left took over this terminology, often describing economic policies it opposed as “neoliberal”.

Visit any high street bookshop chain in Britain and before very long you are likely to encounter one or more stands devoted solely to the subject of happiness and wellbeing.

Review: Robert Stuart, Marxism and National Identity (SUNY, 2006), $29.95
Today Jules Guesde is remembered, if at all, for the treachery at the end of his life—he joined the French wartime government in 1914 and remained in it till the end of 1916.

Chris Ealham: Review: Revolution and reaction in Spain

Review: Andy Durgan, The Spanish Civil War (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007), £14.50
For all the thousands of books published on the Spanish Civil War, few studies of the conflict’s origins, course and consequences are as valuable and welcome as this current study.

Review: Gotz Aly, Hitler’s Beneficiaries: Plunder, Racial War and the Nazi Welfare State (Verso, 2007), £19.99
Hitler’s Beneficiaries is an important milestone in the study of Nazism and the Holocaust. At first glance, a book on German government financial policy and taxation is not likely to set the heart racing. However, a detailed study of these aspects yields some extraordinary results.
