PORTUGAL remains unstable, and the instability is increasing. The Socialist Party government is continuing its policy of ‘pin-prick’-attacks on the working class in the factories and on the land. The more left-wing elements of the socialist party, opposed the official line of handling land and factories back to their ‘rightful’ capitalist owners, are being forced out of the party.

Whereas previously the American ruling class had been quite happy to leave the defence of Western capitalist interests in the region to the apartheid regime in South Africa, now they have decided to intervene directly in order to force the pace of change throughout the region.

The rise of the Nationalist Parties in Scotland and Wales has had considerable impact on the British labour movement. It threatens to undermine the Labour Party’s electoral base and has divided socialists as to whether the demands of the Nationalists for autonomy and independence should be supported. The question was discussed at the conference of the Socialist Workers Party in June, when the following theses were approved.

On July 17 1977 Sid French, secretary of the Surrey District of the Communist Party, announced the formation of the New Communist Party. The breakaway by the longstanding leader of the Stalinist opposition within the Communist Party marked the most serious crisis in the CP since 1956 when the Russian invasion of Hungary caused at least 7,000 members, many of them workers, to resign in disgust.

The anti-fascist mobilisation at Lewisham on August 13 marked a new stage in the struggle against the new Nazis in Britain. West Indian youth were drawn into the struggle on a large scale for the first time, and the police used the occasion to try out a number of new tactics.
