‘Know your enemy’ has always been a useful adage for socialists. In that spirit this issue of Irish Marxist Review begins with an analysis by Kieran Allen of how the Irish ruling class has waged class war on the majority of people in this country and the effects this assault has had on their living standards and conditions of life.

“Whatever the consequences, Labour must discharge its historic obligation to defend working people as best it can. At this juncture, it can only do so from within the Government. Connolly’s party must stay in and fight on.”
This is what Jack O’Connor, the President of SIPTU wrote in the latest issue of his union magazine.

Our standard view of evolution today is to an extent coloured by cultural norms, the ubiquity of the first image above means it is often the first thing many people will think of when they hear the word evolution. The reality of human evolution is, however, far closer to the tree like structure in the second image with it's many offshoots. The fact that only one species of human exists today is actually the exception rather than the norm and for much of our evolutionary history multiple hominid species co-existed.

We are, undoubtedly, living in turbulent times. The battles being fought are not just hand and fist, gun and mortar but are also being fought in the realm of possibility as new orders and ideas take shape in and out of the battles on the streets. There is a new enthusiasm for ideas to explain the crisis we have found ourselves in and more importantly there is an appetite for ideas that offer an alternative, a way out. These ideological shifts are happening side by side with and emerging from struggle.

The years 2012-2022 will be a decade of commemorations, as the centenary anniversaries of some of the defining events of twentieth century Irish history are remembered, celebrated, re-analysed and revised: from the all out class warfare of the Dublin Lock-out of 1913; the First World War 1914-1918; the Easter Rising and the slaughter on the Somme in 1916; to the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1917; through to the partitioning of the island of Ireland and the establishment of two states, north and south, in the early 1920s.
