John Molyneux: Editorial (Irish Marxist Review 2013 Vol 2 Number 6)

Throughout the eighteen months of the IMRs existence the joint question of the recession and austerity i.e. the determination of the ruling class internationally to make our class internationally pay for the crisis, has been the overarching political issue. Of necessity, therefore, it has been the question to which IMR has repeatedly returned.

Michael Taft: The Class Impact of the Recession

Despite the repeated assertions of Government ministers and orthodox commentary, we are not all in this together. We are not all being asked to make, nor have we made, an equal and proportionate contribution to resolving a crisis that originated in the global financial sector.

Kieran Allen: Whatever Happened to the United Left Alliance?

6

17

jun 13

The United Left Alliance is in a comatose state from which recovery, at the moment, appears unlikely. Its steering committee has not met since December and some of its participants have left. At a time when thousands of people are looking for an alternative to the political establishment, the radical left has proved unable to forge a viable, broad organisation that could win their allegiance.

John Molyneux: Understanding Left Reformism

jun 13

There is something of a vogue for left reformism on the left at the moment. I stress ‘on the left’ because it couldn't yet be described as a societal phenomenon, except with Syriza in Greece. It doesn't generally proclaim itself as left reformism preferring to sail under such flags as ‘fresh thinking’, ‘rethinking the left’ and ‘left unity’. Nevertheless the trend is real and perceptible both in Ireland and internationally.

The early years of the 20th century saw an extraordinary ferment of radical artistic creativity in Russia, parallel to the political upheavals starting in 1905. Malevich, Blok, Mayakovsky, Zamyatin, Bely, Meyerhold, Vertov, Scriabin, Diaghilev, all pushed beyond traditional aesthetic boundaries and were influential beyond the borders of Russia or, eventually, the USSR. Not all subscribed unambiguously to revolutionary politics, but all contributed to the climate of revolutionary change.

Stewart Smyth: Privatising the anomaly – public housing in Northern Ireland

jun 13

For over four decades the delivery of public housing in Northern Ireland had been little changed, with one unified public housing provider across the six counties.

Seán Moraghan: The Revolts of the Rural Working Class before The Famine

6

jun 13

Irish labour history extends backwards in time well beyond the totemic events and figures of 1913. The Irish working class, historically, was firstly a rural rather than an urban group, and it had a history of militancy that lasted for almost a hundred years before the Famine (1845-49).

Colm Stephens: The Large Hadron Collider: Who gives a Higgs Boson Anyway?

6

jun 13

By now the Large Hadron Collider or LHC and the Higgs boson have become big news. Countless newspaper articles over the past year or so have tried to keep their readers up to date on the progress towards finding the so-called `God particle'. Despite the acres of newsprint and millions of web pages how many of us actually have a real grasp of what is going on in the tunnels below the Swiss-French border close to Geneva?

Peadar O’Grady: Hugo Chavez Frias (1954-2013): The king is dead, long live the revolution?

6

79

jun 13

The death earlier this year of Hugo Chavez at the age of 58 prompts immediate questions regarding his legacy and his successors.

Kieran Allen: Review: Maurice Coakley, Ireland in the World Order: A History of Uneven Development

6

jun 13

There has been a flowering of left wing writing about Ireland in recent years but books that come from an explicitly Marxist position are less frequent. Maurice Coakleys book, Ireland in the World Order, is a brilliant addition to the latter category and deserves to be widely read.
