What exactly did it achieve? Does it provide the Third World with an alternative and viable road to socialism to that of Moscow’s stultifying bureaucrats? Can its methods be repeated elsewhere?

Geoff Hodgson and Bob Rowthorn have both made replies to Jonathan Bearman’s Anatomy of the Bennite Left (International Socialism 2 : 6). This article attempts to take up the points raised by both, particularly in relation to the Alternative Economic Strategy.

It has become clear that the SWP has decided that workers’ alternative plans are a diversion from the revolutionary strategy, although some individual Party members hold an opposing view. Apart from some rhetorical statements in Socialist Worker, the only sustained critique that I and the Lucas Aerospace stewards know of, is the recent article by Dave Albury in International Socialism 2:6. This comment is intended to contribute to the honest debate over alternative plans called for in that article.

To characterize alternative production as ‘utopian lunacy’ as the editors did in IS 2 : 5, may seem a little bizarre when they then counterpose it to the ‘politically correct’ demand of nationalization under workers’ control, a demand that as far as I know has not been taken up seriously by any trade union organisation – official or unofficial – since the war. Further, they then make a concession to the alternative production case by implying that it can make effective socialist propaganda, but are reluctant to pursue this point, in their condemnation of it as ‘utopian lunacy’.
