This issue of the journal has been expanded by another 16 pages, mainly to accommodate two major articles: Alex Callinicos and John Rogers on Southern Africa after Mugabe, and Chris Harman on Theories of the Crisis. The latter is the first of a three part enterprise on the theme of locating the crisis.

Wednesday, 27 February 1980 – the first day of the Zimbabwean general elections. At the main polling station in Salisbury’s Harare township, a huge queue of black voters awaited their turn impatiently. Walking along this winding line of people we were welcomed by a chorus of cock-crows and cries of ‘Jongwe!’ ‘Jongwe’ is the Shona for ‘cock’; this bird was the symbol of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), the party which was to win a landslide victory in these elections

It is now six years since the worst recession since World War II hit the western economies. A new recession is now developing, even though in most countries there has not been anything like sustained recovery from the last recession. The rate of growth in the ‘post-recession’ year, 1978, was less than the average for boom and slump years prior to 1973.

Colin Sparks: Raymond Williams, Culture and Marxism

Raymond Williams is Professor of Drama at the University of Cambridge. Surprisingly, for one holding such a position, he claims to stand within the tradition of Marxism. He is a frequent contributor to New Left Review and the editors of that journal have recently published a 400-page book of interviews with him. Part of the publishers’ blurb says that he is ‘the most productive and most influential socialist writer in England today’. There is no way of knowing if that statement is true, but Williams is certainly widely read: his book Culture and Society, first published in 1958, still sells an average of 5–6,000 copies a year.
