It is now fairly generally accepted that the British Communist Party, notwithstanding its revolutionary origins, is a reformist organisation.

It is sixty years since 160 delegates from the main British socialist groups met over the weekend of 31 July/1 August 1920 and founded the Communist Party of Great Britain.

The world economy is a topic more frequently mentioned than clearly identified. Almost all writers on the subject, left and right, are preoccupied with a particular national interest or group of interests – the interests of the predominant political form of power, the State, or a group of States (“the Third World”).

To produce, over twenty years, 117 issues of a theoretical journal, each containing some 60,000 words; to present to English readers numerous contributions to Marxist theory written in French, German, Italian, Swedish, Russian and other languages; to make major contributions to Marxist debate in the fields of philosophy, economics, aesthetics, history, feminism, etc.: all this is no mean achievement.

Mike Gonzalez + Alex Callinicos + Peter Binns: Cuba, socialism and the third world. A rejoinder to Robin Blackburn (1980)

Responding to Robin Blackburn’s contribution to the debate in these pages on Cuba, presents us with certain problems. While he himself raises a few factual objections to our account, some of which – including the role of the Communist Party and the working class – are serious and will be considered below the most significant points for him are clearly those of emphasis. According to him we dwell too long on Cuba’s economic structure, on the regimented and bureaucratised aspects of the regime, and not enough on its popularity, but that judgement depends on what political task he regards as most significant. As we shall see there are sharp differences between Blackburn and ourselves here, both as regards workers’ revolution and socialism in general and as regards the perspectives for third World revolution today.

Norah Carlin: Marxism and the English Civil War

It is hard for a teacher or student of the English Civil War in 1980 not to feel that Marxism is under siege with supplies running out. The big guns of the academic establishment thunder ceaselessly against it, and even articles in supposedly left-wing journals proclaim that Marxism is dead.
