Anna Wolf: #metoo
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 363, feb 18 – side 11

Laura Miles: Book Review: Can we combine intersectionality with Marxism?
International Socialism Journal nr. 151, jul 16 – side 204
Note: A review of Sharon Smith, Women and Socialism: Class, Race and Capital (Haymarket, 2015), £11.99
Neoliberal austerity is impacting particularly hard on women. Capitalism relies on women not just directly as workers who generate surplus value but also to provide the primary carers for the next generation of workers and increasingly for the sick and elderly as social service cuts bite. Reproductive rights face serial attacks and domestic violence and other forms of endemic sexism in capitalist society mean that the fight for women’s liberation and, in the shorter term, the fight to defend those rights women have won so far from being rolled back remain key issues for socialists.

Sarah Bates: Marxism and Women: At the forefront of revolution
International Socialism Journal nr. 150, apr 16 – side 133
Note: A review of Judith Orr, Marxism and Women’s Liberation (Bookmarks, 2015), £9.99

The gains won by the women’s liberation movement during the 1960s and 1970s, such as the right to divorce and increased reproductive rights, are real material gains. Women are told that in Britain we have never had it so good. And on the surface that can appear to be true. But, as Judith Orr points out in Marxism and Women’s Liberation, “much has changed for women, but too much has not”. While “women have never had more freedom in their personal lives” women’s oppression still pervades society, and some aspects of sexism have got worse during the last decade.

Ruairi Gallagher: Review: Shulamith Firestone, The Dialectic of Sex
Irish Marxist Review (Irland) nr. 13, jun 15 – side 67
Note: The re-publication of the feminist classic by Shulamith Firestone is very timely, now that we are experiencing another wave of feminism sweeping the globe with a Whole new generation of young women taking an interest in feminist issues.

Christine Kyndi: Kvindeundertrykkelse i dag
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 344, apr 15 – side 15

Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 343, feb 15 – side 11

Nicola Ginsburgh: Lise Vogel and the politics of women’s liberation
International Socialism Journal nr. 144, okt 14 – side 125
Note: A review of Lise Vogel, Marxism and the Oppression of Women: Toward a Unitary Theory (Haymarket, 2014), £19.99
Growing anger and activism around the issue of women’s oppression have seen the return of many arguments from the 1970s and 1980s regarding the usefulness or otherwise of Marxist analysis in exploring this oppression. The reissuing of Lise Vogel’s work, originally published in 1983, though largely neglected at that time, is a welcome contribution to current debates.

Mette Hermansen: 8. marts: Stadig meget at slås for
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 336, feb 14 – side 5

Ken Olende: Review: Intersectionality and black communist women
International Socialism Journal nr. 141, jan 14 – side 210
Note: Erik S McDuffie, Sojourning for Freedom: Black Women, American Communism and the Making of Black Left Feminism (Duke University Press, 2011), £15.99
The radical and significant work of early Communist Party members is written out of mainstream history. Erik S McDuffie looks to an especially marginalised group, black women in the United States who joined the Communist Party.

John Molyneux: Feedback: History without nature? A response to Nancy Lindisfarne, Jonathan Neale and Colin Wilson
International Socialism Journal nr. 140, okt 13 – side 201
Note: Unfortunately I lack the knowledge, particularly in anthropology, needed to offer a comprehensive response to either Nancy Lindisfarne and Jonathan Neale’s “What Gender Does” or Colin Wilson’s “Sexuality in Pre-class Society” in the previous issue of this journal. However, it does seem to me that each of their articles suffers from a serious and fundamental weakness and that, on inspection, this turns out to be basically the same weakness—a tendency to completely separate human history from what Karl Marx referred to as its “natural bases”.

Sinead Kennedy: Marxism and Feminism in an Age of Neoliberalism
Irish Marxist Review (Irland) nr. 7, sep 13 – side 5
Note: Women today live lives that only four decades ago would have been unimaginable to most. They are visible in every aspect of public life today. They are a permanent and important component of the workforce; indeed it is difficult to think of an occupation in which women are not represented.

Gigi Ibrahim: Fighting harassment in Cairo’s Tahrir Square
Socialist Worker nr. 2361, jul 13 – side 6
Note: Sexual harassment is very common in Egypt. We have set up organisations to challenge it in Tahrir Square. Statistics say over 99 percent of Egyptian women have been sexually harassed at some point in their lives.

What socialists say: Have women always been oppressed?
Socialist Worker nr. 2361, jul 13 – side 10
Note: It’s the 21st century and women are still oppressed. For all the talk of equality, we still haven’t achieved it. Women in Britain are still paid, on average, less than men. Women still do more housework and childcare. And women are far more likely to suffer domestic abuse and violence.

Mette Hermansen: Sexisme? Hvaffor en sexisme?
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 330, jul 13 – side 16

Jonathan Neale + Nancy Lindisfarne: What gender does
International Socialism Journal nr. 139, jul 13 – side 99
Note: Times are hard and there is an upsurge of class feeling. This feeling is not necessarily the same as class consciousness, and it often takes unfamiliar forms. There is an upsurge of interest in gender and feminism too, and among the same people. Yet most of the available feminist ideas ignore, or even deliberately obscure, the relation between gender and class.

Jesper Juul Mikkelsen: Blachmans mandeprogram
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 328, apr 13 – side 12

Sheila McGregor: Marxism and women’s oppression today
International Socialism Journal nr. 138, apr 13 – side 95
Note: We live in contradictory times: they reflect how much in society in relation to women has changed, but also how much appears to have stayed the same. Women make up almost half the workforce and just over half of trade union members.

Mahienour El-Massry: Eyewitness Egypt: ‘Never lose faith in the revolution’

Helle S Nielsen: 8. marts: Kvindekamp er klassekamp
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 318, mar 12 – side 14
Note: Den 8. marts var kvindernes internationale kampdag.

Dalia Said Mostafa + Regi Pilling + Siobhan Brown: Women and revolution
Socialist Review nr. 367, mar 12 – side 18
Note: International Women’s Day, 8 March, was established by socialists to celebrate the struggles of working class women. We look at how the fight for women’s liberation and revolution has gone hand in hand with three great revolutions – in Russia in 1917, Spain in 1936-37 and Egypt today.

Deirdre Cronin: Women and Austerity
Irish Marxist Review (Irland) nr. 1, mar 12 – side 30
Note: The position of women in Irish society in 2012 is in a very contradictory place. Double the amount of Irish women are working compared to only a generation before and the attendance of women in higher education exceeds that of men. And yet, in the Irish recession, conservative ideas about women are resurfacing and, courtesy of a Labour Minister for Social Protection, working class women are being scapegoated as feckless ‘unmarried mothers’ who cost the state too much.

Judith Orr: Women, work and walkouts
Socialist Worker nr. 2273, okt 11 – side 10
Note: The strikes across the public sector on 30 November will see more women walk out than ever before in Britain. Judith Orr looks at how women built a tradition of fighting back.

Sheila McGregor: However we dress, wherever we go...
Socialist Review nr. 359, jun 11 – side 6
Note: Women's dress keeps hitting the headlines and not because of fashion shows either.
At the beginning of April, the French government decreed that all women had to expose their bodies more as the new law against wearing the veil came into effect. Then a few weeks later, a Toronto policeman was telling students to avoid dressing like a "slut" if they wanted to avoid getting raped. In other words, they should cover up more.

Cop: ‘Don’t dress like a slut and you won’t get raped’
Socialist Worker nr. 2252, maj 11 – side 8
Note: A student at York University in Toronto, Canada, spoke to Socialist Worker about the incident that has led to the emergence of the new protest movement.

Sally Campbell: The 'SlutWalk' phenomenon: Women refuse to take the blame for rape
Socialist Worker nr. 2252, maj 11 – side 8
Note: Protests, billed as ‘SlutWalks’, are spreading after a cop’s sexist comment to Toronto students. Sally Campbell looks at the culture that blames women for rape and questions whether we should embrace language bound up with oppression.

Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 307, mar 11 – side 13

Judith Orr: Marxism and feminism today

Farah Reza: Book review: The rights of women
International Socialism Journal nr. 123, jul 09 – side 203
Note: Jeanne Flavin, Our Bodies, Our Crimes (New York University, 2009), £30.95
Our Bodies, Our Crimes looks at, but also well beyond, the abortion argument, discussing recent government legislation that has introduced “fetal rights” into US law, the treatment of working class mothers, pregnant women, young women whose future reproductive health is being threatened through “abstinence programmes” that neglect the issue of safe sex, and the general lack of affordable sexual health services.

Socialist Worker nr. 2128, nov 08 – side 12
Note: New figures showing the complete failure of Labour's policies on equal pay were released last week.
The Office for National Statistics has revealed that the gap between men and women's pay is actually growing – and is now over 17 percent. This means that, on average, women earn £12.88 an hour compared to men's £15.54 an hour.

Lindsey German: Women's liberation today
International Socialism Journal nr. 101, dec 03 – side 3
Note: Women have gained a fantastic amount over the last 30 years--a level of financial independence through work, and greater sexual freedom through contraception. But the positive changes have brought their own problems--women are now expected to be career women and house-proud mothers, with the cost of childcare beyond the reach of most workers. At a time when lapdancing clubs seem to be springing up faster than nursery schools, Lindsey German, author of "Sex, Class and Socialism", looks at the reality of women's oppression today. She argues that the involvement of women in the growing global movement raises the possibility of bringing the fight for equality back to the centre of struggle.

Lindsey German: Women: give us a break!

Norah Carlin: Women and the Struggle for Socialism (1985)
Note: Since the rebirth of the women's movement in the mid-1960s there have been many
arguments about the relationship between women's liberation and socialism. Socialists want to
change the world, to get rid of the rotten society we live in and build a better one based on
workers' power. Feminists also want to change the world, so that women can be free and equal.
Are the two struggles the same, or separate? Can feminists unite with male socialists and trade
unionists, or must their struggle always be against men?

Goretti Horgan: Changing women's lives in Ireland
International Socialism Journal nr. 91, jun 01 – side 53
Note: Irish women's lives have transformed in recent years. Goretti Horgan shows how the needs of Irish capital have coincided with shifts in patterns of emigration, marriage and childbirth, but also how collective struggle has started to break down the church's hold over women's lives. Can the new protest movement point the way forward for women's liberation?

Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 181, mar 00 – side 9

Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 174, aug 99 – side 2

Nina Holm Jensen: Er kampen for ligestilling forbi?
Socialistisk Revy nr. 13, mar 99 – side 14

Sharon Smith: Feminists for a strong state?
International Socialism Journal nr. 51, jun 91 – side 71
Note: Catharine MacKinnon: “Toward a Feminist Theory of the State”
The Marxist theory of women’s oppression is defended by American socialist Sharon Smith, as it comes under attack by Catharine MacKinnon in her recent book ‘Toward a Feminist Theory of the State’. Smith asserts that it is class society which is at the root of women’s oppression, and working-class men have no stake in maintaining the family or womens’ oppression.

International Socialism Journal nr. 45, dec 89 – side 3
Note: Violence against women, an increasingly important political issue for more than ten years, is caused by patriarchy – or so many on the left argue. Pornography, it is said, is both patriarchal and an incitement to rape. 'Pornography is the theory, rape is the practice' runs the slogan.
Sheila McGregor argues that such ideas are based on simplistic and ahistorical views of human nature. Using a wealth of statistical material she examines sexuality under capitalism and provides an alternative explanation of violence against women and of the effect of pornography.

Karin Marcussen + Ågot Berger: Kvinder i arbejde: Kommet for at blive
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 26, jan 87 – side 10

Ågot Berger: 8. marts: Der er to kvindekampstraditioner
Socialistisk Arbejderavis nr. 6, mar 85 – side 4

John Molyneux: Do working class men benefit from women’s oppression
International Socialism Journal nr. 25, sep 84 – side 117
Note: Chris Harman’s Women’s Liberation and revolutionary socialism (International Socialism 2:23) is in many respects an excellent summary of the Marxist case on the woman question.

Chris Harman: Women's liberation and revolutionary socialism
International Socialism Journal nr. 23, mar 84 – side 3
Note: Revolutionary Marxists differ from all other people who stand for women’s liberation in one important respect. We do not believe women’s oppression is something that has always existed – either because of the biological differences between the sexes or because of something inherent in the male psyche.

Sue Cockerill + Marta Wohrle + Jane Ure Smith: Rape: no easy answers

Note: Sue Cockerill, Jane Ure Smith and Marta Wohrle look at the issues involved in the controversy over the jailing of rapists.

Tony Cliff: Alexandra Kollontai: Russian Marxists and Women Workers
International Socialism Journal nr. 14, sep 81 – side 75
Note: Over the last ten or so years two examples have been used by many who consider themselves socialist feminists to bolster their position of the need for a separate women’s organisation. One was the example of Clara Zetkin and the German socialist movement, the other that of the Russian Marxists and above all Alexandra Kollontai.

Anna Paczuska + Lin James: Socialism needs feminism
International Socialism Journal nr. 14, sep 81 – side 105
Note: ‘[In Siberia] ... the women usually took home the men’s linen; but Bronstein [Trotsky] refused to benefit from such comforts, washed his own linen and mocked at revolutionaries so ensnared in bourgeois habits and prejudices as to burden their womenfolk with such work.’ Isaac Deutscher, The Prophet Armed: Trotsky 1879–1921, Oxford 1970, p. 41.

Juliet Ash: Clara Zetkin: A reply to Tony Cliff
International Socialism Journal nr. 14, sep 81 – side 120
Note: Tony Cliff’s article in International Socialism 2 : 13 on Clara Zetkin attempted to point out some of the grave complexities involved in understanding the development of socialist and feminist movements during the last 100 years. In doing so he employed a classic male leadership method, conveniently picking out from writings and correspondence of this period quotes from socialist women which would suggest a concern with issues considered important by socialists and feminists at present.

Janet Vaux: Feminists in the Labour Movement
International Socialism Journal nr. 14, sep 81 – side 124
Note: A reply to Tony Cliff: Clara Zetkin and the German Socialist Feminist Movement in ISJ2:13.
The general truth behind the attacks by Zetkin and Kollontai on contemporary women’s rights movements is that civil rights struggles are reformist; they don’t really change things, but leave the basis of a divided class society intact. It is quite usual, and I think correct, to say that the 19th century women’s rights movements were a struggle on the part of bourgeois women to get equal rights with bourgeois men. But, at this time, the working classes were also struggling for many of the political and educational rights enjoyed by bourgeois men.

Tony Cliff: Clara Zetkin and the German Socialist Feminist Movement
International Socialism Journal nr. 13, jun 81 – side 29
Note: Alienation is the core of capitalism. Under this system people treat each other not as ends in themselves, but as mere means; not as people, but as objects. This also applies to sexual relations both in the bourgeois and in the proletarian family. But from the fact that women of all classes are alienated one should not draw the conclusion that they all react in the same way to this alienation. On the contrary, in the final analysis the proletarian woman is spurred on by it to revolution, the bourgeois to reaction.

Lindsey German: Theories of Patriarchy
International Socialism Journal nr. 12, mar 81 – side 33
Note: Perhaps the most persistent and widespread theory around the Women’s Movement today is that of patriarchy. It takes many different forms but the ideas behind it – that male domination or sexism is something which exists not just as a product of capitalism but as something quite separate from the capitalist mode of production and which will endure beyond capitalism – are accepted so widely that a wholesale rejection of the theory is greeted with complete and genuine amazement.

Note: There are two questions which confront us with regard to the liberation of women. One is how we locate the origins of women’s oppression. Is it to be found in the institutions of the state and the family? Is it to be found in an autonomous patriarchy? Is it to be found in the sex-gender system? If each of these understandings is only partial then how is a fuller, deeper understanding to be synthesised?

The second question is how – as women – do we organise ourselves? Do we work within an autonomous women’s movement?; within an autonomous women’s movement and an existing political organisation (Labour Party, Communist Party, small revolutionary organisation)?; or do we build an independent communist women’s movement which is politically allied but organisationally distinct from a revolutionary party?
